'Beyond Fontana’, our very successful December show, will be extended through to Sunday 9th., when at 3pm we’ll be presenting a performance by Verena Langloh. At 4 pm we’ll be holding a discussion with Stephanie Moran, the curator of 'Beyond Fontana'.   We’d like to consider how – why - we seek as viewers to establish an identity vis-a-vis the work of art - whether this is a modern ailment stemming from ‘identity’ art that (purportedly, with increasing desperation and diminishing returns) validates the artists themselves, the backdrop to which of course is the all-encompassing cult of the artist as somehow elected to represent us. (Back to the Coalition.) Art for the artist’s sake.
As viewers of art, how much of ourselves do we invest in the work? Our relationships with different works are necessarily differently placed, in what ways do we relate to works, and how may this change depending on content, style and identity - of the artist and the artwork in relation to ourselves? Otherwise, what are we left with? A room (generally) some art (hopefully) and us. Where do we fit in? Left to our own devices (as viewer or artist) do we flail around looking for art-historical or contemporary references (whether plagiarism, hommage or downright theft) and thus comfort ourselves with an unquestioned and therefore safe elitism? Art for the art’s sake?
Where do we locate ourselves, as viewer and co-author, in the art we enjoy or admire? How do we get art nowadays? Do we have to?
